Abstract

This study analyzes the poem "Gugur" by W.S. Rendra using a pragmastilistic approach, an interdisciplinary method that integrates stylistics and pragmatics to examine both the aesthetic and communicative functions of literary language. The study aims to explore how stylistic elements in the poem—such as metaphors, personifications, and connotative diction—function as speech acts conveying
ideological, moral, and nationalistic messages. This qualitative interpretive research applies speech act theory (Austin and Searle), implicature theory (Grice), and stylistic analysis to examine the poem. The findings reveal that "Gugur" not only offers poetic beauty but also acts as a communicative medium of resistance and national values. Through expressive and symbolic language choices, Rendra constructs a social reality that evokes collective awareness among readers about the significance of sacrifice and national identity. The study concludes that the pragmastilistic approach is effective in uncovering the layered meanings of literary texts and highlights the strategic role of the poet in delivering ideology through poetic expression.
